Haemangioendothelioma (Kupffer cell angiosarcoma), myelofibrosis, splenic atrophy, and myeloma paraproteinaemia after parenteral thorotrast administration.
A case of thorotrastosis occurred 25 years after thorotrast angiography, with the previously unrecorded association of myeloma type paraproteinaemia. The relationship between haemangioendothelioma due to thorotrast and other vascular sarcomas of the liver is briefly reviewed.
متن کاملThyroid disease following the administration of thorotrast.
Four cases of thyrotoxicosis are reported among 35 patients who had been given Thorotrast during the investigation of intracranial haemorrhage. For the group as a whole Thorotrast had been given between 11 and 31 years (mean 23.4 years) before this study. Thyrotoxicosis occurred in four patients between six and 17 years (mean 11.8 years) after the injection of Thorotrast. The fact that thyrotox...
متن کاملThe Role of the Reticulo-endothelial System in Hemorrhagic Shock
"Blockade" of the RES by thorotrast so lowered the tolerance of hemorrhagic shock in rabbits and dogs that a reversible degree of hemorrhagic shock became irreversible. This was true not only in normal rabbits, but in rabbits made resistant to hemorrhagic shock by producing resistance to endotoxins. Rabbits which had been pretreated with thorotrast and then subjected to hemorrhagic shock displa...
متن کاملHistory of the use and toxicity of thorotrast.
In Lisbon, Professor Egaz Moniz, Nobel Prize laureate in medicine for 1945, pioneered the introduction and use of Thorotrast particularly for the visualization of arteries. He produced a large number of excellent publications which contributed, within 2 to 3 years of its first production, to its widespread adoption throughout Europe, Japan and North America. Moniz was not alone in this pioneer ...
متن کاملPrimary liver cell carcinoma 24 years after intravenous injection of thorotrast.
Thorium dioxide, when injected intravenously, is taken up by the reticulo-endothelial system and retained indefinitely, rendering the liver and spleen radio-opaque (Radt, 1930). A 25% colloidal solution of thorium dioxide was marketed under the name of "thorotrast" and used not only for hepatolienography but for retrograde pyelography, bronchography, and angiography generally, not to mention ot...
